Founded by Cenap And in 1929 in the Kavaklıdere neighbourhood of Ankara, Kavaklıdere is Turkey's first private-sector wine producer. Production moved to a modern 50-hectare complex in Akyurt in 1987; the company now operates three production facilities — Akyurt, Côtes d'Avanos (Gülşehir/Cappadocia) and Pendore (Kemaliye/Aegean).
The Akyurt site is surrounded by 21 hectares of estate vines, predominantly the indigenous Kalecik Karası. Ankara's continental climate and wide diurnal temperature swings preserve the freshness of the wines.
Kavaklıdere is widely credited with rescuing the indigenous Kalecik Karası grape from near-extinction in the 1990s. The range covers Kalecik Karası, Narince, Öküzgözü and Boğazkere alongside international Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay across labels such as Ancyra, Yakut, Selection, Prestige and Côtes d'Avanos.
The Akyurt cellar offers guided tastings and vineyard tours on weekdays by appointment.
