Aegean

Stretching from the Urla peninsula to the island of Bozcaada, the Aegean coast is one of Anatolia's deepest viticultural landscapes — volcanic soils, cooling sea breezes, and indigenous varieties like Bornova Misketi and Urla Karası shape the region's terroir. Boutique wineries offer tastings, vineyard tours, and on-site stays.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Aegean vineyards?

Spring (May–June) and autumn (September–October) are the ideal windows. Harvest runs from early September to mid-October — the most active time for vineyard walks and grape picking. Summer is possible but midday heat can be intense.

How do I get to Urla from Izmir?

Urla is about 50 km from Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport, a 45–60 minute drive. The İZBAN suburban rail from central Izmir reaches Urla; from there, a taxi or winery transfer covers the last mile to individual estates.

How do I get to Bozcaada?

The island is reached via the 35-minute ferry from Geyikli (Çanakkale province). Çanakkale itself is accessible by road or ferry from Istanbul. On the island, bicycles, scooters, or rental cars are the most practical way to get around.

What indigenous grapes are grown on the Aegean coast?

Bornova Misketi (an aromatic white), Urla Karası, Karasakız, and Sultaniye are the signature mainland varieties. On Bozcaada, the island-specific Vasilaki and Çavuş are also widely grown.
